Oaklawn announced on Friday it has moved the date of the Arkansas Derby to May 2. It had been scheduled for April 11.
The purse for the race will be $750,000. It had been scheduled for $1 million, but across-the-board purse reductions were to start Saturday in an agreement between the Arkansas Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and Oaklawn. The move was made in the wake of the track's casino being temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Oaklawn also is racing spectator-free at the moment, with the purse adjustment meant to carry racing through the scheduled close of the season May 2.
“Churchill Downs understands the circumstances created by the current health crisis, and, therefore, will allow the full 170 points towards Kentucky Derby eligibility as long as we meet the minimum purse threshold of $750,000,” Lou Cella, president of Oaklawn, said in a release. “The purse reductions are across the board. If operations return to normal between now and May, we will adjust them accordingly.”
