Southern Phantom, the uniquely-marked Thoroughbred who made his first start in a year Friday at Oaklawn, finished 10th and was in good order following the race, according to his owner, Danny Caldwell.
Caldwell purchased Southern Phantom at auction in November, for $20,000. He was making his first start in the region in the maiden special weight route for 4-year-olds and up. Southern Phantom had previously been based in New York.
"He's come back good," Caldwell said Friday. "We'll look for something else when he's ready to run again."
Caldwell said before the race he suspected Southern Phantom would need a couple of starts before being at his best, given that he had last raced in February 2019.
