Newspaperofrecord will scratch from Saturday’s $100,000 Sand Springs Stakes at Gulfstream Park, trainer Chad Brown said Friday.
Newspaperofrecord, the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, has not run since finishing last of nine in the Grade1 Belmont Oaks Invitational last July 4. Brown was planning to use the Sanibel Island as a prep for the Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs in early May and the Grade 1 Just a Game at Belmont Park, scheduled for June 6. But the Distaff Turf Mile has been postponed to September and there is no certainty the Just a Game will be run on June 6.
“It didn’t serve a purpose anymore at least in my mind,” Brown said of the Sanibel Island for which Newspaperofrecord was the 9-5 morning-line favorite. “Also, the turf is very firm and while she doesn’t necessarily need it soft, I’m not so sure she wants it rock hard either.
“We’ll wait and get some clarity on the stakes schedule, particularly the big races in her division and hopefully get things situated at some point,” Brown said.
Brown also mentioned that he wasn’t thrilled about having to get another new rider for Newspaperofrecord. Irad Ortiz Jr. is the only jockey that has ever ridden the filly and he hasn’t ridden since March 19, opting not to ride as the coronavirus pandemic has worsened. Brown named Javier Castellano but on Thursday it was revealed that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
The scratch of Newspaperofrecord will allow Another Time to draw in from the also-eligible list.
