Although racing is suspended at Santa Anita, the Florida Derby card Saturday at Gulfstream Park includes a trio of 8-1 shots that merit “prime play” status. Diving in …
Race 6 – Bodexpress (2) may or may not be off form, but he should make an easier lead in the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope, extended to two turns this year. If he gets loose, Bodexpress could be gone. However, one caveat that also applies to Florida Derby starter Ete Indien: only one of the nine races this meet at a mile and an eighth was won by the pacesetter. Nonetheless, 8-1 is a square price on Hal’s Hope controlling speed Bodexpress.
Race 8 – Bourbon Resolution (5) has not raced in eight months, but his allowance upset last winter at GP proves he runs well fresh. His numbers are solid, and the Grade 3 winner fits on class in this $75,000 sprint stakes. Fat price at 8-1.
Race 13 – Would you take 8-1 on a multiple graded winner in peak form, in a Grade 3 mile on a “firm” course? March to the Arch (3) won half his firm-turf starts, he missed by only a head last time in a graded race won by the pacesetter. This is an ideal spot for March to the Arch, whose starting odds could be lower than his program price.
The above are prime wagers, Saturday also is mandatory payout day in the 20-cent pick six, which begins with $1.6 million already in the pool. For the sake of action, below is this handicapper’s pick-six blueprint. The sequence is on races 9-14.
Race 9 – Key scratches from this $100k turf mile: front-runners Souper Escape (3), Newspaperofrecord (5) and Jakarta. This ticket plans to go five-deep: Zofelle (2), La Signare (6), Getmotherarose (7), East Moon (8) and Valedictorian (12).
Race 10 – Will try to survive this G3 turf marathon including three: Gentle Ruler (5), Mean Mary (6) and longshot stretch-out Cap de Creus (7).
Race 11 – Four deep in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks: Spice Is Nice (5), Swiss Skydiver (6), Lucrezia (7) and favorite Tonalist’s Shape (9).
Race 12 – Odds-on Zulu Alpha (9) should win this G2 turf marathon, but if the exepcted slow pace proves problematic for the late-running favorite, Channel Cat (1) provides support. He is effective on the front. This ticket is two-deep.
Race 13 – March to the Arch (3), a single at 8-1. (see above)
Race 14 – Tiz the Law (7), a single at 6-5 in the G1 Florida Derby.

Race 10 – 5, 6, 7
Race 11 – 5, 6, 7, 9
Race 12 – 1, 9
Race 13 – 3
