Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico has delayed the opening of its stable area to May 1 to be in compliance with extended state restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, the track announced Thursday. The meet opens May 22.
“The May 1 restart date requires that horsemen will need to find alternative locations for qualifying works in April," Jeff True, general manager of Ruidoso, said in a press release. "Our goal continues to be to prepare for racing at Ruidoso Downs as scheduled on May 22.
"However, if viral conditions warrant a further delay, we will announce as soon as it is known and will make any race date changes that are warranted for the health, safety, and welfare of all concerned, including the horses. As we have said all along, the health and safety of our community and our racing industry has to be the top priority.”
The current state restrictions are effective through April 30, according to the press release.
