Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., has issued some updated protocols for racing participants in response to the ongoing and winding coronavirus pandemic. The track is conducting live racing, but without spectators in the stands. Below are the protocols, directly from the Oaklawn overnight. The track is moving into the portion of its meet that features a number of major stakes races, and these policies will come into play for some participants:
Oaklawn jockey protocol beginning 4/3/20: Update
Due to the recent corona virus outbreak and limited space in our jocks room,
any jockey who has not been a regular rider at Oaklawn during the 2020
Oaklawn racing season will not be allowed to participate at Oaklawn for the
remainder of Oaklawn's 2020 race meet; unless, the jockey is specifically
named in a stakes race to be run at Oaklawn on that day, and in such case
the said jockey named will be allowed to ride that specific day's card in its
entirety only.
Jockey's coming to Oaklawn named in stakes races will not be allowed to
access to the backside and will need to report to the health screening desk by
the American Pharaoh statue upon arrival the day of the stakes race. The
rider will be escorted to the quarantine area where they will remain until an
Oaklawn Security Guard escorts them to the paddock for the race they are
entered to ride. The quarantine area will have restrooms, TV and food but
will not have a shower, hot box, etc. At the paddock they will be weighed at
the winner's circle scale with their tack then escorted to the horse they will ride.
When the race is over, the valet MUST sanitize that saddle before it is brought
upstairs to the jocks room. The Rider is then escorted, by the Oaklawn Security
Guard, back to the quarantine area. The rider is asked to take all their
belongings with them and exit the premises without having any contact with
anyone else. Important, the jockey, trainer or owner is responsible to provide
the jockey their own valet.
