Australia: Time for a late night Quaddie

Randwick is in the midst of a strong program in Sydney, Australia, and the racing concludes with a 20-cent pick four on the final four races - the seventh through 10th. In local parlance, the pick four is known as the Quaddie.

It's time to conquer the Quaddie, and with 20-cent bets, it is easy to gain considerable coverage for a modest sum of money. The first leg, the Group 1 Australian Derby, jumps at 1:55 a.m., Eastern - good morning! - or 10:55 p.m., Pacific.

All four races have good quality with strong field sizes, so there is plenty of appeal in that regard. Heck, it's not like we're supposed to go anywhere anyway. Better to lay low at home and cash a ticket or two.

Wagering on the Randwick program is available through DRFBets.com.

Glancing through the card, the first and last legs races seem to have standout runners compared to the middle races. In the seventh race, the Group 1 Australian Derby at 1 1-2 miles, Castelvecchio (1) and Shadow Hero (2) will be dominant in the betting. Best use them both for safety.

In the eighth race, the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at six furlongs, Nature Spirit (1) may go favored, but consider Santa Ana Lane (3), Redzel (4) and Bivouac (7). They are all capable of strong performances. They have all raced well on wet turf races and Randwick is listed as heavy for this program.

The big race of the day is the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, a $1.2 million handicap with a field of 20, the ninth race.

Melody Belle (1) was beaten 1 1-4 lengths by Regal Power in the $3.26 million All-Star Mile at Caulfield Racecourse on March 14, her second start of 2020. Melody Belle, a 6-year-old New Zealand-bred mare, will carry joint highweight of 125.5 pounds in the Doncaster Mile.

Brandenburg (19) may go favored and benefits from an assignment of 111 pounds.

Brandenburg won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at seven furlongs at Rosehill Gardens on Feb. 22 and was later third in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at a mile on March 7, and fourth in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at 6 1-2 furlongs at Rosehill on March 21.

Others to consider are Mister Sea Wolf (5), Con Te Partiro (11) and Imaging (12). Con Te Partiro was once trained by Wesley Ward. The 6-year-old mare was a stakes winner at Saratoga in 2016 and at Royal Ascot in England in 2017.

The 10th race at Randwick is the Group 3 P.J. Bell Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Rubisaki (2) is a standout, having won 6 of 8 starts. She has dynamite form and could easily be the shortest-priced winner of this sequence.

Pin Sec (3) returns from a six-month layoff. She had good form in the winter of 2018-19 at the start of her career and could benefit from the recent rest.
