The rains hit hard Saturday morning and left a sloppy track for a morning training session that saw champion British Idiom work a half-mile in 51.60 seconds. It is overcast and in the 50s heading into the Saturday card that starts at 1 p.m. Central and the track is listed as muddy. The 10-race program incldues the $100,000 Purple Martin for 3-year-old fillies and an optional $80,000 claiming route for 3-year-olds that could produce starters for the Arkansas Derby that will now be run on May 2.
The final local steppingstone to the Arkansas Derby, the $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes next Saturday, drew 47 nominees, including champion Storm the Court. The Oaklawn Stakes, over a mile and an eighth, will share a program with the $150,000 Oaklawn Mile that drew 49 nominations.
There are a number of scratches on the Saturday card, while jockey Mike Smith, who was named on two horses, including Kimari in the Purple Martin, is not riding the program. Click here for changes as available Saturday.
