The winner of the $750,000-estimated Ruidoso Derby on June 6 will be a first-time stakes winner.
None of the 10 qualifiers from Sunday's 11 time trials have won a stakes, but four qualified to the finals of major futurities in New Mexico last year.
Hotsempting, seventh in the Ruidoso Futurity last June, set the fastest qualifying time from Sunday's trials, running 400 yards in 19.94 seconds. Hotsempting was second in the Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs last July, but was disqualified and listed as unplaced after a post-race test showed an excessive amount of the anti-inflammatory Dexamethasone, according to a ruling published by Sunland Park stewards in March.
At the time, Hotsempting was trained by Jose Muela. Sergio Ibarra is the current trainer of Hotsempting, one of two fillies in the Ruidoso Derby.
The runners with the 10 fastest times in the trials, regardless of finishing positions, earned berths in the final.
There are six trial race winners in the final. Apollitical Papa, who was fourth in the Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park last October, won Sunday's fourth trial in 19.97 seconds over the maiden Kylee Joy, who qualified with a second-place finish in 20.01 seconds, the third-fastest time.
Other trial winners who ran quick enough to qualify are Tres of Hero (20.03), Ces Final Try (20.05), Katch This Bird (20.06), and Oatman Creek Senator (20.167).
Running Buddy (20.10) and Kleptomaniac (20.15) were second and third to Katch This Bird, but ran fast enough to qualify. Cartel Charly, second to Tres of Hero in 20.12 seconds, qualified.
Oatman Creek SEnator and Tres of Hero were third and fifth in the Ruidoso Futurity last June.
