Three of the top 16 qualifying point earners for this year's Kentucky Derby, Sole Volante, Ete Indien and Shivaree, have all been entered to go a mile in a $55,000 open allowance race next Wednesday at Gulfstream Park.
Sole Volante has been idle since finishing second to King Guillermo in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 7. His connections say they have not ruled out using this race as a prep for a possible start ten days later in the Belmont Stakes.
Shivaree and Ete Indien finished second and third respectively behind Tiz the Law in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28. Earlier this winter, Ete Indien won the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. Both Sole Volante and Ete Indien are trained by Patrick Biancone.
Shivaree is using Wednesday's headliner as a prep for either the Blue Grass or Haskell, Ete Indien likely for the Haskell. Florent Geroux, who has been aboard Ete Indien in his last two starts, has been named on Wednesday and will keep the assignment if able to meet the coronavirus protocals currently in effect for jockeys shipping in to ride at Gulfstream Park.
