Fire At Will, overlooked in the wagering despite coming into the race off a clear cut victory in the Grade 2 Pilgrim at Belmont Park, rallied to an even more convincing three length triumph as a 30-1 outsider in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Ricardo Santana Jr. rode the winner for trainer Mike Maker. Battlegrond rallied to finish second, a neck in front of the pace setting Outadore.
Fire At Will, who also won the With Anticipation Stakes over a sloppy track this summer at Saratoga, sat a perfect trip rating just off the early leader Outadore while saving ground from the outset. Santana tipped Fire At Will off the rail to commence his bid in early stretch, readily ran down the leader at mid-stretch and won going away. Battleground finished best of all to earn the placing while never menacing the winner.
Fire At Will, a son of Declaration at War, was bred by Troy Rankin and is owned by Three Diamonds Farm. Final time for the mile over a "good" turf course was 1:35.81. He paid $62.40.
"I thought he was way over-priced," said Maker. "Everybody thought he needed the lead to win but he proved that wasn't the case when he broke his maiden rallying from last this summer at Saratoga. Ricardo rode a fabulous race, he got a perfect trip, but all the credit goes to the horse."
