LEXINGTON, Ky. – WHITMORE made his fourth straight start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint a winning one as the 7-year-old gelding got a terrific ride from Irad Ortiz Jr. in pulling an 18-1 upset Saturday in the $1.5 million race Saturday at Keeneland.
Ron Moquett is the trainer of Whitmore ($38.80), who pulled away to a 3 1/4-length triumph after splitting rivals with less than a quarter-mile remaining in the six-furlong Sprint. The winning time was 1:08.61.
C Z ROCKET was second, a neck before third-finisher FIRENZE FIRE in a full gate of 14. EMPIRE OF GOLD was fourth and MANNY WAH was fifth.
Moquett co-owns Whitmore, by Pleasantly Perfect, with Robert LaPenta and Head of Plains Partners. The gelding had finished eighth, second, and third, respectively, in the last three runnings of the Sprint (2017-19).
An emotional Moquett told NBC Sports: “He wants it … it just means something.”
The $2 exacta (7-2) paid $276, the $1 trifecta (7-2-8) returned $1,092, and the 10-cent superfecta (7-2-8-9) was worth $2,988.58.
Mike Welsch will have the full Sprint recap in short order.
