Surely Whitmore's steady-closing BC Sprint win will put to rest any lingering idea that the Keeneland main track is biased toward front-runners today. It's fast, and some speed horses have run very well, but the track's not biased.
As for Whitmore, how many times will you find that a horse's 38th start is the most meaningful of his career? Whitmore has been very good for a very long time, the king of the Oaklawn sprint division for years running. He was a fine second to retired Volatile in the Vanderbilt in July, and he could be forgiven his subpar performance in the Forego, run over a radically wet track, but after Whitmore's uninspiring fourth last month in the Phoenix at Keeneland, I didn't think this 7-year-old warrior still had it in him. He did.
