Sun Path made short work of three overmatched foes in a first-level allowance race Friday at Fair Grounds, winning by just shy of 13 lengths while running alone through the final furlong and a half. This 2-year-old filly is a Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Brad Cox. She's by Munnings out of Touch the Star, by Tapit, making her a full sister to Bonny South, who won the 2020 Fair Grounds Oaks for the same connections, and Sun Path, according to Cox (and from the look of things, for that matter) is more advanced than Bonny South at this point in her career.
After easily winning a one-turn mile maiden race at Churchill following a sprint debut at Keeneland, Sun Path went two turns for the first time Friday in a race that scratched down to four and presented little competition for Sun Path. That likely was fine for Cox, who wanted the filly to get some route experience before jumping into two-turn stakes races. Sun Path raced from second place while Rock Star Parking set a solid tempo, took the lead past the three-furlong pole, and was much the best while under moderate urging from Florent Geroux, stopping the timer in 1:42.95 for one mile and 70 yards, a raw time good for an 84 Beyer Speed Figure. That's a good number, not great, but Sun Path has more room to grow. Cox hinted the Silverbulletday next month at Fair Grounds comes up too quickly for Sun Path, who could start in the Martha Washington at Oaklawn Pawk or await the Rachel Alexandra at Fair Grounds in February. Oaklawn seems more likely since Cox has Golden Rod Stakes winner Travel Column at Fair Grounds and she coud start in the Rachel Alexandra.
One race earlier Friday, another Cox-trained 2-year-old filly, the Godolphin homebred Divine Comedy went to the lead and won a two-turn maiden race, her second career start, by more than five lengths. Her time for the one mile 70 yards was 1:44.37 and Divine Comey got a 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Her win margin was inflate because logical contenders Take Charge Lorin and Empress Catherine turned in modest performances. Divine Comedy is by Into Mischief out of Via Strata, by Street Cry. She's the first foal to race from the mare, who looked like a budding star late in 2014 and early in 2015, winning her first three starts, the last of that string a second-level allowance in which she got a 93 Beyer. But after a fifth-place finish in her stakes debut, the Grade 2 Ruffian, where Via Strata was an odds-on favorite, she never raced again.
