Nick Tammaro has been named track announcer for Sam Houston Race Park. The track's season of racing runs from January into June, with a meet for Thoroughbreds followed by a season for Quarter Horses.
Tammaro, 37, has worked in racing for 13 years in various capacities and he has been active in a number of national handicapping competitions. Tammaro is a native of Houston.
“I was there the second day that Sam Houston opened in 1994,” Tammaro said in a press release from Sam Houston. “I have always loved horseracing; it’s in my blood and I still feel the excitement every time I walk into the track.”
Tammaro said track announcer Travis Stone gave him the opportunity to call his first race. It was 12 years ago at Louisiana Downs. Tammaro was among the guest announcers during Sam Houston's recent meet for Quarter Horses after Chris Griffin became the track announcer for Parx Racing.
“Nick has been a part of the Sam Houston Race Park team for many years as our morning-line oddsmaker and guest handicapper,” Frank Hopf, senior director of racing operations for Sam Houston, said in a release. “He did a tremendous job calling races during our Quarter Horse meet. His passion for the sport of horseracing is contagious and will be a major asset to our team.”
