KJ Desperado set the fastest qualifying time on Day 1 of trials for the $3 million All American Futurity, when he won the marathon card's 15th and final race at Ruidoso Downs. There are another 15 trials for the September classic on Saturday.
The horses with the five fastest times from each card will advance to the 10-horse finale Sept. 6. Click here for more on the card Saturday.
KJ Desparado won his 440-yard trial by three lengths, in 21.45 seconds. The track was listed as fast.
"I knew we had a fast time, but didn't realize it would be that fast," jockey Adrian Ramos told publicity at Ruidoso. "The horse had been working exceptionally well and when we left the gates I could tell that we were going to accelerate."
KJ Desparado races for the partnership of John and Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares, and is trained by Wes Giles.
The other Day 1 qualifiers, according to a press release from Ruidoso, were: Slippin Hayden In 21.510 seconds; Kat Eye Kylie In 21.572 seconds; Jess Dream of Me In 21.651 seconds; and Favorite Blues Man in 21.651 seconds.
