The Texas Thoroughbred Association announced Tuesday a "revamped" schedule for stakes for sales graduates, with each division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star Park in 2022 boosted to $150,000. The races had each been valued at an estimated $100,000.
In addition, the new Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby at Oaks at Sam Houston Race Park in 2023 will each be worth $100,000-added.
The races are restricted to horses that go through the ring at either the Texas Summer Yearling Sale on Aug. 30 or the Texas 2-year-olds in training sale in the spring of 2022. According to a press release, horses do not need to be Texas-breds to be eligible, and the new format eliminates the previous payment schedule.
“In the last two years, Texas Thoroughbred racing has shown a resurgence due to the increased purse money at Lone Star Park and Sam Houston Race Park,” Mary Ruyle, executive director of the TTA, said in a press release. “To continue to build on that progress, the TTA has revamped the Futurity and created a Derby and Oaks with significantly increased purses for all those races. We look forward to our yearling sale on August 30. Our goal is to create greater value for breeders, consignors and buyers.”
The Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity divisions will be held at five and a half fulrongs on the closing weekend of Lone Star Park in July 2022.
The Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby and Oaks details are still being finalized, but each race will be run at a distance of a mile or more in 2023. The races, when first announced, were to have a possible purse of $75,000, but now will each be worth $100,000 added.
