Accelerate led throughout Saturday's Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar to score a memorable upset, spoiling the comeback of Arrogate, the 1-9 favorite who finished a quiet fourth in his first start since a win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in March.
Arrogate was last to the turn and passed a tired El Huerfano, who stumbled badly at the start causing jockey Evin Roman to lose his irons. Arrogate finished 15 1-4 lengths behind Accelerate ($17.60).
Arrogate drew $1,320,483 of the $1,402,055 bet to show.
As a result, the place and show bets were massive. Accelerate paid $32.60 to place and $22 to show. Donworth paid $119.80 to place and $67.40 to show. Cat Burglar paid $38.20 to show.
Accelerate ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:42.15.
This was the first loss for Arrogate since his career debut, a troubled third behind Westbrook and Accelerate in a maiden race at Los Alamitos in April, 2016. Arrogate won his next seven starts, a streak that included four consecutive Grade 1 or Group 1 stakes wins - the Travers Stakes at Saratoga last August, the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita last November, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in January, and the Dubai World Cup.
Arrogate was the world's top-rated racehorse going into Saturday's race. The next rankings are scheduled to be published in early August.
