Run for Retts, who finished fifth in Thursday's seventh race, was declared a non-starter after stewards ruled an assistant starter was holding the filly at the start. Run for Retts broke slowly, and moved into contention behind the leaders on the backstretch before fading.
The stewards conducted an inquiry before making their decision. Run for Retts was 8-1. Her withdrawal led to more than $114,000 in refunds, track officials said.
"The horse acted up right before the gate opened, causing the assistant starter - who did nothing wrong - to try to control the filly," steward Scott Chaney said. "Unfortunately, the gate opened when he did that."
The race was won by Mended ($11.60). Trained by John F. Martin for Troy and Maritza Onorato, Mended has won seven consecutive races since being claimed for $12,500 at Golden Gate Fields in January. The winning streak includes four claiming races, two optional claiming races and a starter allowance. Six of the wins have been at Golden Gate Fields.
