Bendable (2) won the Grade 3 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita in June and starts in a race at the same level in Sunday's $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap for fillies and mares at 6 1-2 furlongs in the sixth race.
It's safe to say the Rancho Bernardo is a bit tougher than the Desert Stormer.
The Rancho Bernardo field is led by Skye Diamonds (3), who won the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 8 at the expense of Constellation and Finest City. Constellation, winner of the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita last January, was also second in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in April. Finest City won the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint last November and was the champion female sprinter of 2016.
Constellation (4) is part of the Rancho Bernardo field. Finest City will not start again until November, trainer Ian Kruljac said earlier this month.
Bendable, who races for Claiborne Farm and trainer Richard Mandella, has never been worse than third in six starts and has four wins. The Desert Stormer is her only graded stakes win. She can be dangerous as a stalker or by disputing the pace, which should help jockey Mike Smith as the race unfolds.
Smith is already having a good day, having guided the promising Soul Streit to a win in the colt's debut in the fourth race.
The Rancho Bernardo will be a tougher test for Bendable. Even a second to the in-form Skye Diamonds would be considered a positive result.
