Giant Expectations won for the first time arund two turns in Tuesday's Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at 1 1-16 miles as the 13-1 longest shot in a field of five.
Collected, the 1-5 favorite who was second in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4, could only finish third after racing last in the field of five for the first seven furlongs. The San Antonio Stakes was worth $300,000.
Giant Expectations ($29) set a modest pace of 24.69 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 49.19 for a half-mile. He was not threatened in early stretch and pulled away to win by 3 1-4 lengths over 8-1 Accelerate. Collected was followed by Hoppertunity and Prime Attraction.
Giant Expectations, a 4-year-old New York-bred colt by Frost Giant, is owned by a partnership that includes Exline-Border Racing and Gatto Racing and is trained by Peter Eurton.
Giant Expectations was sixth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 3. He has won 4 of 13 starts and earned $449,200. He won the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar last August for his first stakes win.
