Trainer Doug O'Neill has a pair of 3-year-olds under consideration for upcoming stakes at Oaklawn, he said on Monday.
O'Neill won a pair of maiden special weight races Sunday at Oaklawn, and both of those horses, Shane Zain, a colt by Medaglia d'Oro, and Tyfosha, a daughter of Flatter, could move into the stakes ranks next month at the Hot Springs, Ark., track.
"Those two were really nice maidens that we brought in there and they didn't disappoint with their efforts," said O'Neill.
Shane Zain dueled and prevailed in a maiden special weight at a mile. O'Neill said he will be considered for the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest on Feb. 19. The mile and a sixteenth race carries points for the Kentucky Derby.
Tyfosha dominated a maiden special weight over six furlongs, winning by four and a quarter lengths and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 80. O'Neill said she will be considered for the $125,000 Martha Washington at a mile Feb. 10, or she could await the Grade 3, $200,000 Honeybee on March 10. The start Sunday was Tyfosha's first since August, when she ran second to eventual multiple Grade 1 wniner Moonshine Memories in a maiden special weight at Del Mar.
