Race 1 – Eight entered this $40k claiming turf mile, non-winners of two. Uber Star (5) made the lead too soon last time and finished third. He drops for red-hot trainer Bill Morey, 6 for 11 this meet. Royal Opera House (8) promises more than he delivers; Winning Element (4) had an impossibly wide trip last time. Ice Kat (7) scratched.

One more scratch would make it a six-horse field and delay the SHF carryover to the next race with seven or more runners. The SHF is a $1 wager, here’s a $16 budget play: 5 / 4, 8 / 2, 4, 8 / 2, 3, 4, 8 / 2, 3, 4, 6, 8

Race 2 – Captain Scotty (1) is likely to be bet off the board in his California debut for new trainer Peter Miller, based on his high-figure debut romp at Laurel. The 9-5 favorite towers over the N1X on speed figures.  Unfortunately, high figures translate to low odds.

Race 3 – It’s a new class level at Santa Anita – a $6,250 claiming route. The level is about the same as an $8,000 claiming route, which is the right spot for Roman Tizzy (4), whose rider is 2017 Eclipse Award-winning apprentice Evin Roman.

Race 6 – Cognitive (4) is an Uncle Mo first-time starter favored at 5-2 for trainer Bob Baffert. Her works are sharp. The comebacker Mondaymorningblues (5) showed promise last summer for Miller. She is 3-1. Two-horse race; minimal wagering value.

Race 7 – Mesut (9) may have more speed than he has shown so far. Trouble is, he is fussy in the gate and tends to break slowly. Up in class from maiden win to N1X, he is worth a gamble at 4-1 on the morning line. The favorite Incensed (8) might prefer five furlongs; six and a half could be a reach.

Race 8 – Last chance to get out; Ministertomyheart (3) is a Steve Miyadi-trained comebacker. They tend to run faster than they train. At 9-2 in the program, the maiden-20 is worth a stab.
