One more unseasonably cold afternoon will bring an end to the eventful 3-day opening weekend of the spring meet at Keeneland, with high temps projected only in the mid-40s today. Unlike yesterday, however, there is no precipitation, and the courses will be rated fast and soft all day. First post is 1:05 ET, with the G3 Beaumont (R7) and G2 Appalachian (R8), both for 3yo fillies, serving as features of a 9-race card.
There are quite a few SCR to note, including a handful from the stakes-caliber 6th race, an $82k turf allowance, and a couple in with heavily favored RUSHING FALL in the Appalachian. All scratches are listed at the end of this dispatch.
Rushing Fall stands a great chance to put an exclamation point on a sensational weekend for Chad Brown, who not only won the Blue Grass yesterday with GOOD MAGIC, but also won the opening-day feature Friday, the Transylvania, with ANALYZE IT, as well as 2 maiden races yesterday, including a 1-2 finish in the R11 finale. Brown and Bret Calhoun (3 wins) clearly have had the best meets so far among trainers, while Jose Ortiz, with 6 wins including the Blue Grass, is faring well toward his stated goal of being the leading jockey here for the first time.
A couple of 2yo maiden races help get us started today as races 1 and 3, with Wesley Ward, as usual, likely to have the favorites with STILLWATER COVE in R1 and LUV THIS LIFESTYLE in R3.
Also, there's a carryover of $30,688 today in the $1 pick six (R4-9).
After Sunday, Keeneland goes dark for two days before a 5-day week starts Wednesday with an 8-race card.
Sunday SCR: R1-(1, 5); R2-(1); R3-(6, 13, 14); R4-(all AEs); R5-(1A, 13, 14, 15); R6-(3, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15); R8-(5, 8); R9-(1A).
