Justify was out for his morning exercise on Thursday morning at Churchill Downs, jogging clockwise prior to his routine gallop, when something out of the ordinary required his exercise rider, Beto Gomez, to use all his skill to avoid a collision.
As Justify was jogging, the filly Sassy Sienna -- who is in the Kentucky Oaks on Friday -- acted erratically and wheeled toward the path of Justify. Gomez quickly got Justify to avoid Sassy Sienna, and both those horses went on about their business without further incident.
It happened quickly, and likely only was seen by observers on the front side of the track, since there are so many obstacles at ground level in the infield that block the view from the backside.
In fact, Justify's trainer, Bob Baffert, who was watching from the backstretch on ground level, said later that he didn't see the incident.
Justify galloped 1 1/2 miles after turning around from his pre-gallop jog, and continued to make a good impression.
