Souper Striking went wire to wire to win the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes on Friday at Pimlico over a very soft turf course.
Souper Striking, who is trained by Mike Trombetta and was bred and is owned by the Live Oak Pantation of Charlotte Weber, set fractions of 26.18, 53.40, and 1:22.60 en route to a final time of 1:51.72 while winning by about six lengths.
Souper Striking paid $4.80 as the favorite in the scratch-reduced field of six. Eleven originally had been entered in the race for 3-year-old fillies.
Secret Message, the 2-1 second choice attempted to rally after the winner but could make little headway through the difficult conditions. Peach of a Gal finished third, about 3 ½ lengths farther back, at 5-1. Secret Message and Peach of a Gal are both trained by Graham Motion.
Souper Striking is now three for nine. The Hilltop is her first stakes win.
