Arlington: Million Preview Day preview

Picture perfect day for Million Preview card at Arlington. High temp in low 80s, east wind (homestretch tail-wind) 8-10 mph. The turf course is firm - and will be in heavy use today. Races 2,3,4, and 10 (the non-stakes races, that is) will be run in lane 1. Races 5,6,7,8,9 (the stakes sequence) are run in the Million lane, 20 feet outside lane 5.

All the changes can be found here

Race 5 - American Derby
No changes.
Starts a jackpot bet I don't care to promote and a standard pick 3.
Captivating Moon (#6) is the top pick at a short price. I think he's better than one other logical, Ezmosh (#5), at least going 1 1/8 miles, but don't quite know what to do with Tap Daddy (#8). Couldn't blame you if you wanted to fade all three and dig deeper.

Race 6 - Modesty 'cap
Scratch La Manta Gris (#5).
Starts a pick 3 and a 50-cent late pick five.
The race runs through Daddys Lil Darling (#13), who moves into post 12 with the scratch. That's still not a good draw and she packs 124-pound highweight. I won't leave her out of the pick five but would also use Hallie Belle (#6) and Prado's Sweet Ride (#9) as Bs, and Princess La Quinta (#7) and Daring Duchess (#11) as Cs.

Race 7 - Hatoof Stakes
Scratch Hayworth (#9) and Mountain Momma (#10)
Starts a 50-cent pick 4 and a 50-cent pick 3
Singling Cool Beans (#1). Her lone turf race produced a third-place finish behind two of the better chances in today's Grade 1 Belmont Oaks, and she figures to be a better horse now than then.

Race 8 - Stars and Stripes Stakes
Scratch Twenty Four Seven (#11)
Starts a 50-cent pick 3
Straightforward to me: I like Arklow (#4) as an A and Canessar (#9) as an A-minus. I suppose some will rate Catcho En Die (#2) on par with those, but if I'm digging deeper I'd prefer the two Mike Makers, Slim Shadey (#3) and Soglio (#1).

Race 9 - Arlington Handicap
Scratch Christian C (#1) and Hot Dad (#2)
Sorry - not getting more creative than Synchrony (#3), the strong favorite. I'm much less against him as the chalk than I am against Divisidero (#11) as the strong second choice. Compass Zone (#4), Western Elegance (#7), and Just Howard (#9) hold the most interest for me as multi-race backups or exacta / trifecta / superfecta partners with Synchrony.
