Big Changes ($2.80) sat just off the pace, took the lead in the stretch and went on to win the $50,000 John Henry Stakes on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs. Colby Hernandez was aboard for Steve Landers and trainer Brad Cox.
There was no immediate final time for the mile and a sixteenth race run on firm turf due to what appeared to be a timer malfunction.
Sir Genghis (5) was declared a non-starter due to a gate incident at the start in which he threw his rider, Kerwin Clark. Clark walked away from the incident, according to Evangeline announcer Michael Chamberlain.
Chamberlain also announced following the race that Sir Genghis opened his gate prematurely, was under the hold of an assistant starter after the rest of the gates opened, and as such the stewards, after an inquiry, ruled the horse a non-starter and all relative wagers were to be refunded.
