Apprentice jockey Asa Espinoza has his first mount of the day on Shackalov (1) in the third race, an $8,000 claimer at a mile. Espinoza, who claims seven pounds, is the leading rider at the meeting with 11 wins, three more than fellow apprentice Heriberto Figueroa.
Apprentice jockeys have done well here in the recent past. Evin Roman, the outstanding apprentice jockey of 2017, won all three riding titles at Los Alamitos last year.
Espinoza, a nephew of jockey Victor Espinoza, began riding earlier this year, and has won 37 races. He will revert to a five-pound claim after his 40th win.
