The first-time starter Sigalert weaved his way between rivals to win Saturday's seventh race, a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds at 5 1-2 furlongs.
The style of the victory suggested Sigalert ($7.60) fits in the meeting's top race for 2-year-olds, the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 3.
Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Sigalert closed on the rail and then moved to the outside of rivals in the stretch to prevail by a half-length over 19-1 Extra Hope, a first-time starter by Shanghai Bobby.
Sigalert, by Street Sense, is owned by Pete and Kosta Hronis and trained by John Sadler. The colt was purchased for $420,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in March.
The colt's is named after a media description in Southern California for a freeway traffic delay. If you are driving on the 605 or 101 freeway and there is a sigalert announcement on the radio, for example, you will rapidly be in a sour mood.
