Handicapping notes, Thursday at Santa Anita …
Race 1 – Low odds is good reason to temper enthusiasm for 9-5 favorite Peach Cove (2). She defeated similar $20k claiming turf milers last out. Favorites have won 41 percent of the turf routes this meet. Small field, low odds. Pass.
Race 2 – With two runner-up sprints under her belt, favorite Claudelle (2) is ready to stretch out and win this mile dirt race for maiden 2yo fillies. However, Speedette (1) is likely to set the pace over a track recently kind to speed. At one mile on dirt, pacesetters won eight of the last 16. That makes Speedette interesting at 5-1.
Race 4 – Sharp class climber Awesome Anywhere (2) is a legit favorite in this N2X sprint, but last-out N2X route winner El Huerfano (6) entered back for the optional $62,500 claim tag and he definitely can sprint. Respect the favorite, but would include El Huerfano at 4-1.
Race 5 – Sometimes the most likely winner comes accompanied with a big question mark. Such is the case with dropper Come On Kat (11) in this maiden-20. She ran well twice in maiden special-weights in summer. Two months later, she shows up for her comeback at rock bottom. Does not look right, yet she “should” win. Crackling Bread (6) is the best alternative.
Race 6 – Not a fan of Shadow Sphinx (6) at 5-2 in this N1X turf mile for 3yos, though his odds could drift up. The top contenders in this handicapper’s opinion are last-out third Noiva (2) and stretch-out Ultimate Bango (3).
Race 8 – The most probable winner on the card is a 5yo maiden running for a $40k claim tag in this downhill dash. Lucky Knickers (9), if she runs as well as last time finishing second in a similar race, should win at a short price.
