Breeders' Cup Mile flash recap: Expert Eye gets up close home, disastrous race for Oscar Performance

Expert Eye rallied down the center of the course and just touched out Catapult, Analyze It, and Divisidero in a driving finish on Saturday at Churchill Downs to take the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile, a grass race that changed complexion at the start when the expected pacesetter, Oscar Performance, stood flat-footed and broke last, eliminating him.

Expert Eye ($13.80) was mid-pack about two paths wide on the first turn, went wide into the far turn and was four wide on the far turn, and closed relentlessly to get up close home and win by a half-length.

Catapult, who finished second, continued the frustrating run for trainer John Sadler, who has now lost with 44 Breeders' Cup starters. Catapult was right with Analyze It a furlong out and got the best of him in deep stretch, only to have Expert Eye nail him. He finished a neck in front of Analyze It.

Analyze It, who led into the lane, nosed out Divisidero for third. It was a much-improved race for Divisidero, who returned to his best form with a return to his favorite course.

Oscar Performance was buried inside near the back of the pack after his disastrous start and made a mild rally late to finish midfield.

Expert Eye completed one mile on a course rated good in 1:39.80.

Expert Eye, 3, was bred and is owned by Juddmonte Farms. He is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and was ridden by Frankie Dettori, who delighted fans with his traditional flying dismount in the winner's circle.

The British-bred Expert Eye, a son of Acclamation, has now won five times in 10 starts. He was a two-time Group 3 winner in Britain earlier this year.
