Global Campaign joined the growing list of locally based Kentucky Derby prospects after coasting to an easy and very impressive 2 1/4 length victory when stretching to one mile and one sixteenth for the first time in Saturday's 10th race.
Coming off a similarly one-sided and easy debut win on January 5, Global Campaign rated off the early pace, readily took command on the second turn, drew off and was taken in hand while cruising to his second straight win. Standard Deviation, who already had a couple of two turn races on his resume', raced forwardly placed but was no match for the winner down the stretch.
Global Campaign, a son of Curlin, is trained by Stanley Hough for the partnership of Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm. He completed the distance in 1:44.29 under jockey Luis Saez and paid $3.40.
Hough said he'll look for one of the many Kentucky Derby preps in about one month's time for Global Campaign's stakes debut including the Fountain of Youth here on March 2, the Tampa Bay Derby and the Gotham at Aqueduct.
"He's a talented, talented horse," said Hough. "You look forward to where he's going to go and where he's going to get tested, which he will. It was the first time around two turns for a lot of them, but good God he handled it well."
