Apprentice jockey Jean Diaz, Jr., who arrived from Puerto Rico earlier this month, won for the first time in California in Saturday's sixth race. Riding Hero for Hire in an $8,000 claimer at six furlongs, Diaz had his mount near the front throughout and won by a half-length over 9-2 Eskenforadrink.
This was the fifth career win for Diaz, whose apprentice claim will drop from 10 pounds to seven.
