Blue skies Saturday at Santa Anita, and two key changes. The race-8 Wishing Well Stakes will be five furlongs on turf (shortened from six and a half); race-10 maiden race will be six and a half on the main track (moved from turf). Track condition and scratches are pending. Preview …
(Main traced labelled "muddy," turf labelled "good.")
Race 1 – Perhaps it was a handicapping blunder not ranking favorite Flat Out Joy (6) higher in this maiden sprint for 3-year-old fillies. She ran okay first out, and trained well since. But this handicapper prefers sharp-working comebacker Overemphasize (2) and second-time starter Chocolate Speights (4). The latter is 8-1.
Race 2 – A turf route with no pace. Halo Darlin (5) had an impossible trip one week ago, but Indypendent Deputy (4) also had a compromising trip two weeks ago when blocked in the lane. This truth is, this race is an absolute puzzle due to the pace scenario.
Race 3 – Swamp Souffle (3) is the most probable winner on the card, and not even the favorite. Only five entered this $32k claiming mile for 3yos, Swamp Souffle can be gone.
Race 4 – In theory, second-time starter Prodigal Son (7) should improve from his speed-and-fade debut. In reality, program favorite Play Money (6) is working as if he is the goods. Expect him to fire a big shot first out. Trainer David Hofmans is 2-for-3 this meet with first-time starters.
Race 6 – Unicorn (4) ran well finishing second in her sprint debut, and she wants to run long. The daughter of Bodemeister is favored in this maiden turf mile. However, second-time starter Holly Hundy (3) arrives from Florida with a reputation. She is considered a better filly than her sixth-place debut suggests. Holly Hundy is listed at an appealing 6-1.
Race 8 – The shortened five-furlong distance is fine for favorite Belvoir Bay (7), who is proven at the distance and simply faster than her rivals in this filly-mare turf sprint. Her odds will be short, as they should be.
Race 9 – Marley’s Freedom (3) is a legit favorite in this G2 filly-mare sprint, 19-race winner Escape Clause (6) gets a class test, Mopotism (5) is a come-from-behind upset candidate in a race likely to unfold at a quick pace. Amuse (7) re-entered a N2X on Monday. Official scratch pending.
(Amuse and Dream Tree are scratched.)
Race 10 – This maiden-50 moved from the hill to the main track. Regardless, second-time starter Secret Courier (8) should move forward adding blinkers and dropping in class.
