Furthering his domination of the local jockey colony, Irad Ortiz Jr. just rode his 6th winner of the 12-race Monday card when SOUPER JAGUAR led for most of the R12 finale, a one-mile turf race for Fla.-bred maidens. Six is one shy of the track mark of 7 held jointly by Jerry Bailey, Luis Saez (twice), and Tyler Gaffalione.
It's been a remarkable last few weeks for Ortiz, the reigning Eclipse Award-winning rider. He has reeled off 3- and 4-win days more often than not, particularly with Saez away on suspension since Wednesday (Feb. 13). When racing resumes here Wednesday, Ortiz will be atop the championship meet standings with 93 winners, with Saez second (84) and still suspended through the coming week.
The Ortiz wins today came with:
R5- LUCKY SONG (4-5f)
R6-WILDWOOD DANCER (7-5f)
R8-MIDTOWN ROSE (6-5f)
R10-ZULU (2-1)
R11-YOUR ONLY MAN (2-1f)
R12-SOUPER JAGUAR (2-1)
In other news from the Monday card, the Rainbow 6 carryover for Wednesday stands at $119,458.
