Pee Wee Reese, a three-time stakes winner in the last two years, will miss a scheduled start this weekend because of a foot bruise.
Trainer Phil D'Amato said Wednesday afternoon that the setback prevented Pee Wee Reese from being entered in Saturday's Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields or the $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita the same day.
“We were looking at both,” D’Amato said. “He has a deep heel bruise. They take a while to get over. We did all the diagnostics. Thankfully, everything else checked out a-okay.”
D'Amato said Pee Wee Reese will be pointed for the Del Mar summer meeting, with a possible prep race prior to the July 17 opening of that season. Owned by breeder Nick Alexander, Pee Wee Reese, 6, has won 7 of 14 starts and earned $412,901.
In his lone start this year, Pee Wee Reese won the Sensational Star Stakes for California-breds on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on March 31.
