Beginning Saturday, Santa Anita will resume using part of the hillside turf course for distance races, but there are no plans in the immediate future to restart turf sprints at about 6 1-2 furlongs on the course.
Saturday's fifth race is the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Stakes at 1 1-2 miles, which begins with a run of about three furlongs on the hillside course before the field crosses the main track and reaches the turf oval for the remainder of the race.
There have been no races of any kind on the hillside course since March 31 when Arms Runner suffered a fatal injury in the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes at about 6 1-2 furlongs.
Director of racing Steve Lym said on Sunday that races at 1 1-4 miles and 1 1-2 miles on turf will be used sparingly through the end of the current meeting on June 23.
