BALTIMORE, Md. - Country House wasn't at Pimlico on Saturday - but his older half-sister represented the family quite nicely, anyway. Mitchell Road, a 4-year-old half-sister to the Kentucky Derby winner, led throughout to capture her fourth straight race, and first graded stakes, in the Grade 3, $150,000 Gallorette Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf.
Mitchell Road, by English Channel, and Country House, by Lookin At Lucky, are both out of the War Chant mare Quake Lake. Additionally, both their sires are champion sons of the late Smart Strike. They were bred by the late J.V. Shields and race for his widow, Mrs. J.V. Shields, and Guinness McFadden; LNJ Foxwoods also partners in Country House. Both horses are trained by Bill Mott.
Under Joel Rosario, a keen Mitchell Road ($6.20) led the field through honest opening splits of 23.28 seconds for the quarter, 47.07 for the half, and 1:10.59 for six furlongs on turf rated firm. She had enough in reserve in the lane, and drove clear to hold sway by 2 1/4 lengths at the wire. She finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.21.
Thewayiam came on for second, a half-length ahead of Viva Vegas.
Mitchell Road is now 7-5-2-0 on her career. She has won four straight, including the Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds last out.
