Pole Setter broke alertly and led throughout under jockey Luis Saez, edging away to a 1 1/4 length victory over the late running outsider Pulsate in the $100,000 Paradise Creek Stakes. Strike Silver finished third with the previously undefeated Fog of War finishing a disappointing sixth as the 4-5 favorite in the field of seven 3-year-olds in the seven-furlong turf fixture. Pulsate had to survive a stewards inquiry into the stretch run before the final result was made official.
Pole Setter, a vastly improved son of Take Charge Indy, earned his second straight victory for trainer Brad Cox having posted a game entry-level allowance-and-optional-claiming win over a sloppy main track seven weeks earlier at Keeneland. Pole Setter completed the distance in 1:20.77 over a firm course and paid $10.80. The winner was backed down from 8-1 to 4-1 in the final minutes before the race.
Fog of War, idle since capturing the Grade 1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine in his 2-year-old finale in September, broke a bit awkwardly, was well placed behind the leaders into the stretch, lugged in while attempting to take a run at the winner in early stretch and could not sustain his bid.
