Bast was fully extended to win the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes by a neck over front-runner Comical on Friday at Santa Anita. Leucothea veered out at the break, unseated jockey Norberto Arroyo, and ran through a line of photographers shooting the race from the outside fence adjacent to the winner’s circle. Two photographers entered the amubulancce after the race.

Bast won the mile and a sixteenth race in a slow 1:46.10; Comical finished three lengths back in third. Been Studying Her and Buyer’s Remorse completed the order of finish. Bast ($2.40) was ridden by John Velazquez; Bob Baffert won the Chandelier for the 11th time.

Bast was widely considered the leading candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and she might still be. But a final time of 1:46.10 was dreadfully slow, and the BC Juvenile Fillies is now wide oen.
