Brian Hernandez Jr. gave Digital a perfect trip in Fair Grounds' 4th race Saturday, a first-level dirt-route allowance for 3-year-olds, settling him into the pocket behind pace-setting Blackberry Wine, coming out for room at the quarter-pole, and making hte front at about the furlong grounds. Digital was on his way to a second straight win - until he wasn't. Digital, a son of Into Mischief, was trying two turn for the first time and just didn't see out the trip as Blackberry Wine fought, wrested the lead back about 50 yards out, and likely earned a start in the Risen Star Stakes here next month.
Blackberry Wine, a Calumet Farm homebred by Oxbow trained by Joe Sharp, now is 2-2 in dirt routes, having easily won a two-turn Churchill maiden race over the slop last fall. Blackberry Wine ran below form in a turf start last time out and might be a legitimately decent colt. He was timed in a sharp 1:43.22 for 1 1/16 miles, the final time coming after a moderate pace. The racing surface appears to be quick, but even so this seems like a good time for a January 3-year-old.
Chestertown took a wild amount of betting action and chugged home a well beaten third.
