Charlatan and Nadal, who won divisions of the Arkansas Derby on Saturday, both emerged from their races in good order and will fly from Arkansas to California on Monday, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday morning.
"That was a good day," he said. "Now I've got to put them in bubble wrap."
There are no immediate plans for both, said Baffert, who said he is awaiting updated stakes schedules from around the country before plotting paths to the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby.
"It would have been nice if the Derby was run yesterday," Baffert said. "We would have been live. Just got to keep them all healthy."
A third highly regarded Baffert trainee, Authentic, worked five furlongs on Sunday at Santa Anita in 1:00.40. Like Charlatan and Nadal, Authentic is unbeaten. Authentic is being targeted to the Santa Anita Derby, which was originally scheduled for April 4 but is now slated for June 6 on a stakes schedule Santa Anita has put out in the hope of being given the go-ahead to resume racing in the next fortnight.
I'll have a full follow-up story on the Arkansas Derby, with updates on all the top finishers -- like King Guillermo and Basin -- up later at www.drf.com
