Astute earned an 87 Beyer for her dazzling victory in the $100,000 Desi Arnaz Stakes on Saturday at Del Mar, the highest figure this year by a juvenile filly in California. Astute won by more than seven lengths in 1:17.28 over a “fast” track that generates relatively slow times. Astute, two-for-two, is trained by Richard Mandella was ridden by Mike Smith.
The previous top figure by a California juvenile filly was 80 by Madone, on turf. The previous dirt high was 79 by Princess Noor and Queengol. Nationally, the year’s top Beyer by a juvenile filly is 95, earned by Dayoutoftheoffice in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park. Vequist earned a 93 winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.
