Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux did not ride Saturday's sixth race at Santa Anita after being unseated in a one-horse spill in the day's fifth race.
Desormeaux was aboard Scat's Choice who broke down while contesting the lead in a $25,000 claimer for non-winners of two. Scat's Choice suffered a fatal injury, track stewards said.
Desormeaux was booked to ride Lure Him In in the sixth race and was replaced by Edwin Maldonado. Desormeaux did not have mounts in the final three races on the program.
Desormeaux, who could be seen crawling onto a stretcher moments after the spill, was transported to a local hospital for examination, track stewards said.
