Dalika led by a huge margin for much of the $103,125 Keertana, and only Temple City Terror was able to overcome the deficit when along in the final strides for her first stakes victory Saturday night under the Churchill Downs lights.
Dalika, ridden by Miguel Mena, led by perhaps 20 lengths midway through the 1 1/2-mile turf race, but as she finally grew weary in the final furlong, it was Temple City Terror who reeled her in. Tweety Show was third, Pass the Plate was fourth, and favored Delta’s Kingdom was fifth in a field of nine fillies and mares.
Temple City Terror, a 5-year-old Temple City mare, was ridden by Adam Beschizza for owner Pocket Aces Racing and trainer Brendan Walsh. She paid $13.20 after finishing in 2:29.57 over firm turf, with this being her fourth win from 20 starts. It was her first attempt at the marathon distance.
“She has a great turn of foot when you let her loose,” said Beschizza.
“It worked out great,” said Walsh. “This filly has been rock-solid from Day One. She shows up every time.”
The Keertana was the last of two filly-mare stakes on an 11-race Downs After Dark card, following the Grade 3 Winning Colors won in impressive fashion by Sconsin ($4.20).
