Sally Stanford was always going to be favored to win Sunday's eighth race, a $50,000 claiming race for maidens at 5 1-2 furlongs.
The final price could understandably take some observers by surprise. As the field of 10 was loading, Sally Stanford was 6-5. When the final prices were shown, Sally Stanford was 1-2. That's a sizeable, and successful wager, by any standards.
Late changes in win pool odds have become commonplace. They are not always successful. In the first race, winner Zip Now went from 2-1 favorite during the load to 5-2 second choice at the final prices. The late money in that race went on Surplus, who went from 5-2 to 2-1.
Earlier Sunday, the last-minute bettors were paid when Iva Toguri went from 9-1 to 5-1 in the final flash and won a maiden race on turf.
Late fluctuations may look odd (so to speak), but the tracks don't mind. The money helps their mutuel handle.
