Lone Star Park set to resume racing Saturday

Lone Star Park near Dallas will resume racing Saturday after cancellations Thursday night and Friday night.

“We’re good to go tomorrow,” said Terry Meyocks, president and chief executive officer of the Jockeys’ Guild.

The card was canceled Thursday night after a Lone Star meeting with jockeys in which the riders wanted assurance they would be able to see a doctor or specialist in the event of an injury. Their concerns came about after jockey Carlos Montalvo had issues securing an appointment with a specialist in the wake of a July 4 spill in which his agent said he sustained facial fractures.

Lone Star has an ontrack insurance policy, said Meyocks. He characterized the issue as a system failure.

There were meetings Friday between the riders, track management, horsemen and insurance representatives. Lone Star canceled Friday night’s card to give proper notice to fans and horsemen, said Meyocks. Lasix treatments were to have started around 2:30 p.m., Central, which was the same time the Lone Star racing office put out notice of the cancellation for Friday.

Meyocks said the riders have received the assurances sought in the situation, which he characterized as much improved.

“We appreciate the efforts of Lone Star, Chubb Insurance, and the insurance broker,” he said.
